(Loves Park, IL) – A local manufacturer of orthopedic medical devices, Serola Biomechanics, Inc. (Serola) received an award for Continuing Excellence in Exporting during the 2019 Governor’s Export Award ceremony held at the Union League of Chicago on June 26. Serola’s Founder & Co-CEO, Dr. Rick Serola was present to accept the award from Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton and Erin Guthrie, Acting Director of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). The Governor’s Export Awards are the State’s highest recognition of export achievement.

“It was truly an honor to receive this award that acknowledges our ongoing initiative of providing affordable pain management solutions worldwide,” said Serola. “It’s even more gratifying to be given this award as we celebrate our 30th year in business. We are looking forward to continued growth both domestically and internationally.”

A total of 12 Illinois companies were recognized and the judging criteria was based upon the following: export sales as a ratio of total sales, export sales growth, number of jobs created and retained by exports, factors indicating progressive international marketing strategies, multi-lingual and cultural efforts, progression in ratio of exports sales to total sales and number of suppliers based in Illinois.

“Thanks to the hard work of our exporters and the organizations that support them, Illinois is one of the top exporters in the entire country. Exports are an integral part of our economy, employing thousands of men and women across the state and contributing millions of dollars to the state’s economy,” said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. “We are proud to recognize the businesses and groups who excelled in exports over the past year and look forward to continuing to support and grow the industry.”

Serola began exporting in the mid-90’s to its first international distributor who is based in the United Kingdom and remains an instrumental partner. To date, Serola has partnered with 59 international distributors, exports into over 40 countries and holds over 50 domestic and international patents. This year, with the support of Illinois’ State Trade and Export Promotion (ISTEP) program, Serola has focused on expanding into the Southeast Asian Market and has established relationships with two distributors in South Korea, another in Japan and is currently in negotiations with additional prospective partners in both Japan and Malaysia. The company will exhibit at an international trade show, Medical Fair Thailand, later this year with the intent of gaining several more distributors.

“Exporting has been invaluable to the growth of the Serola brand and the overall sustainability of the company,” said President of Serola Biomechanics, Inc., Thomas Person. “We are a small company that likes to do big things and this award is one more step that direction.”

About Serola Biomechanics, Inc.

Serola Biomechanics, Inc, is the result of research done by Dr. Rick Serola, a chiropractor. Get a Head Start with Bio-Kult Migréa

BioKult_MIGREA_3-4_US_CMYK HRTake a natural approach to tackling head discomfort with the launch of Bio-Kult Migréa, the first scientifically developed, advanced multi-action formulation to target both the digestive tract and the head.

Common, disabling, recurrent, neurovascular head discomfort affects 1 in 7 people globally,1 with the majority of sufferers experiencing at least one attack a month, often causing severe impairment and compromising their quality of life, both personally and professionally.

Despite this high prevalence, more than 50% of sufferers are not satisfied with their current treatment, choosing to self-medicate using non-prescription drugs,2 thus increasing the risk of medication overuse side effects.3

Backed by a new published clinical trial,4 this latest addition to the renowned Bio-Kult range offers real hope to sufferers looking for a long term and natural solution. Containing 14 probiotic strains to support gut health and overall wellbeing, Bio-Kult Migréa also includes magnesium and vitamin B, both of which contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.5 Research suggests that the inclusion of magnesium may also help increase resilience to stress6 which is often a trigger for attacks. The addition of vitamin B contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system,5 and to the regulation of hormonal activity5 with research suggesting an association between higher B intakes and protection against inflammation.7

Previous evidence has demonstrated that gut bacteria plays a key role in the gut-brain axis and disturbances or imbalances of the delicate gut flora may be associated with neurological discomfort.8 The association between neurovascular and gastro intestinal issues could be linked to increased intestinal permeability, which allows leakage of undigested food particles and endotoxins into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation9 and possible attacks. Beneficial strains of gut bacteria play a crucial role in supporting the health of the gut lining, maintaining and improving gut barrier function, thereby modulating immune responses and reducing inflammation,10 which research suggests may be of benefit.

Bio-Kult Migréa retails for $29.50 for 60 capsules and is available from Amazon.com or Bio-Kult.com

Structural Elements® Announces Strategic Network Growth Model to Support Franchise Growth Plan

Screen Shot 2019-06-18 at 10.23.01 AMHolistic Orthopedic Wellness Brand Develops Plan with Multiple Paths to Ignite Growth Coast to Coast

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Structural Elements®, also referred to as (se) ®, an orthopedic wellness brand that provides the highest standard of care through a contemporary business model and a proprietary treatment approach, announced today a Network Growth Model strategically designed to create opportunities for individuals interested in clinic ownership or therapy practice to join the (se)® franchise system.

(se)® refers to the proprietary approach founder and CEO Doug Bertram developed as an acupuncturist. Operating on the fundamental belief that the body is a single unit, Bertram developed a mapping technique locating patterns of focal adhesions in response to mechanical stress.

Committed to bringing this treatment to more communities, the Network Growth Model, which offers four paths, supports the growth and development of independent but interconnected specialists and investors to deliver a high impact patient experience and high growth financial opportunity. The four paths include:

  • Regional Developer (RD): The RD will develop, own and operate multiple clinics within their respective territory. Each of these clinics is under agreement with a Clinic Franchisee who owns and operates a physical clinic.
  • Clinic Franchise (CF): The CF will establish, own and operate a physical, franchised clinic within a RD’s territory. CF owners offer treatment rooms and administrative services to Micro Franchisees.
  • Micro Franchisee (MF): The MF, a licensed therapist who can be a chiropractor, physical therapist, acupuncturist, osteopath physician or a massage therapist and has also been trained in the (se)® method, will provide services to patients.
  • Area Representative (AR): The AR, also known as the Master Therapist, is a Micro Franchisee that is responsible for sourcing and training other Micro Franchisees in the (se)® methods and maintaining quality standards within an entire region.

“The roll out of the new Network Growth Model is a major turning point for us,” said Bertram. “The model will allow us to bring this approach to more communities throughout the United States as we have made more paths to ownership available depending on whether the interested individual is an investor or a practicing therapist. An easy way to think of it is as a co-working space – Therapists will solely be focused on providing care and will operate their own practice out of the clinic allowing for the clinic owner to strictly manage clinic operations.”

Structural Elements® currently has three clinics open and operating (Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland and Milwaukee, Wisconsin). The Milwaukee clinic, which is owned by Area Representative Luke Laga, welcomed in three Micro Franchisees in the last four weeks and Hagerstown and Frederick are in the process of onboarding multiple micro franchisees as well.

“The Network Growth Model offers each path a unique set of benefits,” added Bertram. “Whether it’s Micro Franchisees who reap the benefit of having a modern space to practice in at a price point that is reasonable or the Clinic Franchisee who has little overhead thanks to our pipeline of therapists ready to practice, this new model sets us apart and will allow us to grow in target markets throughout the country while helping more people achieve their personal best through our comprehensive approach.”

Structural Elements® operates on a cash-based model, as this approach does not limit therapists to treating just the site of acute pain, but rather treat the whole patient.

Dr. Merkle: Keynote Speaker at the Clinical Society for Integrative Oncology

Dr. Van Merkle DCSeoul, Korea —April 21, 2019— Dr. Van Merkle was recently the keynote speaker at the Clinical Society for Integrative Oncology in Seoul, Korea. About 250 oncologists, researchers, and other medical doctors were in attendance. Several traveled from China specifically to hear Dr. Merkle, including some very renowned doctors.

Some of the most renowned doctors in attendance were: Dr. Jin Zhe, M.D. (urologist, professor at Peking University, in the elder care division); Dr. Zhang Jinping, (chair/director of 300 elder care hospitals in China – which covers approximately 100 million people); Dr. Seo Jungbok, O.M.D (K.M.D) vice president in DaeJung Elder Care Hospital in China; Dr. Fu Ping, (chairman of the Chinese Clinical Nutrition Association); Dr. Kim Kyungah, M.D. (G.P) team doctor of DaeJung Hospital, Korea; Dr. Park Minsoo, M.D. (G.P.) one of the most renown TV star doctors in Korea.

Interpreters were obviously needed however, many doctors from China and Korea were medically trained using English textbooks and spoke English fairly well. South Koreans can receive a free, fairly comprehensive blood test every 2 years through the government. There is great potential for natural oriented doctors to use lab testing in their nutrition practice, which is why Dr. Merkle was invited to speak.

Dr. Merkle spoke on laboratory testing and nutrition. He also discussed how serious problems sometimes have simple, safe, natural solutions. Maybe a week or 2 of trying a safe, natural, option might show dramatic laboratory results even in advanced cancer cases. Dr. Merkle presented several of his own cases, showing the validity of nutrition backed up with laboratory testing. Dr. Merkle’s presentation was enthusiastically received. Many doctors wanted pictures with him and he received several very nice gifts.

Dr. Merkle also presented certificates to 26 doctors of the first class trained in Korea using Dr. Merkle’s Science Based Nutrition (SBN) system. The class took the doctors a year to complete and was held by a South Korean doctor that has been using SBN for approximately 10 years. It has taken a long time to develop the SBN system and translate the reports into Korean.

Dr. Merkle was asked to travel to China, Dubai and Singapore and back to South Korea to lecture and train doctors on more natural care, as well as options for cancer and elder care. Those tend to be their most pressing and costly health problems. Dr. Merkle said, “Speaking at the oncology conference was very exciting. I also ate some great food and visited beautiful national landmarks but most importantly, I made some very good friends. I look forward to returning.”

Dr. Van D. Merkle DABCI, DCBCN, CCN, is an August 1982 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. He is board certified in clinical nutrition and a board certified clinical internist, who has practiced in Centerville, Ohio for over 35 years. He is the founder, developer and president of Science Based Nutrition (SBN) – a laboratory and nutrition, patented computer analysis system. He has been the host of the talk show Take 2 Healthcare on WHIO 95.7 FM every Saturday 11AM to noon for over 25 years.

The Benefits of Sleep with Proper Mattresses and How It Can Help Chiropractic Patients

portrait of a beautiful young woman sleeping on a cloud in the sky
portrait of a beautiful young woman sleeping on a cloud in the sky

Getting sleep is difficult, but it can be even more difficult for those who deal with chronic pain. A person might find themselves tossing and turning trying to get comfortable without pulling anything out of alignment. For many people, that’s a sign that it’s time to buy a new mattress that’s better suited for themselves.

Mattresses should be replaced every 6 to 10 years in order for them to be as supportive as they can be, but because they’re big purchases, many people delay the purchase.

Getting a new mattress won’t solve all of their issues, but it can go a long way to helping to make their lives easier. Here’s some of the ways that replacing a mattress with one that’s better suited for its user can be helpful for people who need chiropractic services.

More Comfortable Mattress Makes It Easier to Sleep

With a mattress that is suited to their bodies and its needs, it will be easier for chiropractic patients to get comfortable at night, and therefore be easier to sleep. A mattress that is well suited for them, whether they sleep on their side or on their backs will do them a lot of favors in the long run.

A comfortable mattress will make it easier for those sleeping in it to get REM sleep, making them feel more rested when they wake up.

Better Support Means Better Spinal Alignment

The older a mattress gets, the worse it is for supporting the people sleeping in it. It can stiffen or sag, depending on what the mattress is made out of. This will make its user sleep in positions that are less than ideal for their spines. Chiropractic patients in particular who struggle with back injuries will find that they need more support to keep everything where it should be.

The more support they have, the less work they will need from their chiropractors over time. It won’t fix their issues, but it will make them easier to deal with in the long run.

Better Sleep Means Less Likely to Be Injured

The better quality sleep someone gets, the less likely they are to be injured. This is due to several reasons. The human body does most of its healing while it is asleep, which is why patients are encouraged to get lots of rest when they are injured. People are also less likely to take risks they can’t handle when they have slept well, making them less likely to get injured.

Anyone who isn’t sure what type of mattress would help them the most should try talking to their chiropractor about what to look for in a mattress. They can also test out a lot of different mattresses at mattress stores, or take advantage of many online sellers’ return policies to find the right mattress for themselves. They are an investment that is worth making for your patients’ long term health needs.
