Foot Levelers Partners with Women Chiropractors Professional Organization, Donates $100,000

women chiropractors 3Roanoke, Virginia – Feb. 28, 2019 —   A collaborative partnership was announced today between Foot Levelers, the world’s leading provider of hand-crafted custom orthotics, and Women Chiropractors (WDC), a not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to raising up women leaders in the Chiropractic profession. In support of these aspirations, Foot Levelers formalized the relationship on February 14, 2019 and has made a $100,000 donation to help WDC expand its resources.

“This partnership comes at an important time: within the next 10 years, it’s estimated half of all Chiropractors will be women,” says Kent S. Greenawalt, CEO, Foot Levelers. “The growth of the WDC is remarkable, and we are very excited to partner with this outstanding organization.  Our entire team will work toward helping the organization to further empower female doctors in Chiropractic technique, leadership roles, educational opportunities, and practical growth. Ultimately, this will help to improve Chiropractic care at a time when drug-free pain treatment options are in high demand.”

WDC currently has more than 7,400 members in 58 countries. The organization is open to female Chiropractors and female Chiropractic students.  WDC provides resources that include scholarships, educational seminars, leadership opportunities, networking platforms, and an online virtual academy launching April 2019.

According to a 2012 article published in The Journal of Chiropractic Education, 60 percent of Chiropractic patients are women. Additionally, research shows 78 percent of women consider themselves as the primary healthcare decision maker in their household.

Dr. Cyndy Shaft-Toll, WDC founder, says “WDC connects caring, compassionate, confident and charitable Chiropractors.  We know that many female patients prefer to see doctors with whom they feel a connection. Together, we are committed to keeping our minds and hearts open, elevating women Chiropractors and students by encouraging growth and igniting the change we all want to see in the world.”

Shaft-Toll added: “Foot Levelers’ generosity will help our organization provide resources to raise up women leaders in the Chiropractic profession. This long-term partnership will help our grassroots organization grow stronger. Foot Levelers shares our commitment and passion in supporting this altruistic endeavor, and furthering our position as a safe, sacred, non-judgmental community for female Chiropractors.”

Foot Levelers has a long history of supporting the Chiropractic profession. The company has opened several Chiropractic health centers and educational campus buildings, funded Chiropractic research studies, established college scholarships for aspiring DCs, and more. Foot Levelers also hosts hundreds of educational seminars and free webinars each year, all aimed at supporting Chiropractors.

“We all know Chiropractic is the answer to so many issues,” concludes Greenawalt. “That’s why it’s vital to support Chiropractors in several ways. We are honored to have this relationship with the WDC and look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

Metagenics to Launch Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Center (PLMC)

Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Center by Metagenics

Gig Harbor, WA, location to host patient clinic and research laboratory on-site

ALISO VIEJO, CA, January 24, 2019 – Metagenics, Inc., a health sciences company, today announced the opening of the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Center (PLMC), a clinical research laboratory and patient clinic, at its Gig Harbor, Washington, location.

A shared vision of Jeffrey Bland, PhD, Joseph Lamb, MD, and Metagenics CEO Brent Eck, the PLMC will be a research laboratory, as well as a state-of-the-art medical clinic with insurance-billing capabilities. It will be staffed with practitioners for the purpose of providing healthcare to members of the public. The Center will follow a personalized lifestyle medicine approach, tailoring its therapeutic programs to each individual patient.

Dr. Jeffrey Bland stated, “I am so pleased to see the opening of the Gig Harbor Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Center that — through its excellence in patient management and research efforts — will accelerate the availability and adoption of this important approach to the prevention and management of chronic disease.”

Heading up the PLMC will be Dr. Joseph Lamb.

“It is with great pleasure that I return to Gig Harbor,” said Dr. Lamb. “Thanks to Brent Eck and Dr. Bland, this unique collaboration is actually re-creating the best elements of a research center that had done groundbreaking studies in Functional Medicine and is now combining those with the best practices of a personalized medicine approach. Good healthcare should be widely available, and our delivery of care in an insurance-based reimbursement model will make this care available in our community.”

“The fundamental goal of the PLMC is to match a personal approach to health to each individual’s needs and capabilities,” said Brent Eck. “Our belief is that much of our health is a very learnable set of skills — a series of small behaviors performed day in and day out, repeatedly over the long term. We also believe that the healthcare practitioner is the key advisor on that individualized learning journey. That’s personalized lifestyle medicine; that’s the future of healthcare.”

PLMC to Employ Clinical Trial Model to Build Unique Data Set Certain chronic diseases are related to lifestyle and aging, and they are taking an increasing toll on individuals’ efforts to maintain good health. As a result, there is a significant unmet need to identify the value of a personalized lifestyle medicine approach for improving health measures, through diet, nutritional supplementation, exercise and mind-body programs.

A significant element of the PLMC will be its groundbreaking research program, which eventually will be used to develop therapeutic tools and programs that will permit personalized lifestyle practitioners to meet this need.

Metagenics is supporting a team of investigators in this research program — the LIFE-HOUSE Team (“Lifestyle Intervention and Functional Evaluation—a Health Outcomes Survey). Team members Joseph Lamb, MD; Michael Stone, MD; Deanna Minich, PhD; and Sara Gottfried, MD have built a truly unique clinical- trial model. Their model utilizes a tent-umbrella-bucket design to gather data on individuals, both as individual patients and as members of an overall employee health population. The vision for this project is that excellence of care will benefit the individual participants, with widening ripples of influence upon their workplaces, their families, their communities, and ultimately upon the way medicine is practiced in the 21st century.

The initial data for this program are being gathered in order to make correlations among genes, the microbiome, diet, blood markers, and similar factors, with the goal of helping to make predictions for therapeutic programs.

Opening to the public January 24, the PLMC will be a separate entity from Metagenics, Inc.

About Metagenics, Inc. Metagenics was founded on a revolutionary idea: Our genes do not predetermine our health potential and, through nutrition, we can impact how our genes express themselves. Embodied by our company motto — “genetic potential through nutrition” — this groundbreaking principle drives us to deliver high-quality, science-based nutritional supplements, medical foods, and lifestyle programs. We support healthcare practitioners in their efforts to help patients achieve their health goals. With a range of nutritional solutions designed to support individual lifestyles — including non-GMO, gluten-free, and vegetarian offerings — we remain committed to supplying practitioners around the world with advanced tools to help improve patient outcomes.

New Study: Standing More at Work is Associated with Less Neck and Back Pain and More Optimal BMI for Office Workers

Start StandingDETROIT, MI – Locally based health organization announced today that their new study has revealed that standing more and sitting less is correlated with less neck and back pain and a more optimal BMI.  Start Standing researchers have come to these conclusions after analyzing survey data from office workers who typically sit and/or stand at their desks during a typical workday.

The first major finding is that “standers” (respondents who stand 20% or more of the time) experience 31% less back pain than “sitters” (respondents who stand less than 20% of the time), on average.  The study also found that “standers” experience 28% less neck pain than their “sitters” counterparts.  The final major finding was that “standers” report having an average BMI of 24.9 while “sitters” reported an average BMI of 27.1 – a difference of 8%.  Thus, standing more at work is associated with neck and back pain and a more optimal BMI for office workers.

Author Dr. RJ Burr asks, “Is the difference maker of the statistics really standing versus sitting, or maybe people who stand at work already tend to be health conscious, practicing other health-conscious habits like walking, exercise, and diet/nutrition?… I believe, at very least, standing at work imparts active behaviors and a healthy mindset, which leads to overall wellness.”

About Start Standing

AMERICAN CHIROPRACTIC ASSOCIATION ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS

ACA LogoArlington, Va. – The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) elected Robert C. Jones, DC, of Albuquerque, N.M., as its new president last week in Washington, D.C., during ACA’s annual meeting, the National Chiropractic Leadership Conference (NCLC).

Dr. Jones was elected president by his peers on ACA’s Board of Governors (BOG), which consists of five chiropractors and one public member. He replaces outgoing president, N. Ray Tuck, Jr., DC, of Christiansburg, Va. The BOG also elected Michele Maiers, DC, MPH, PhD, of Minneapolis, Minn., as ACA’s vice president.

Dr. Jones was elected to the BOG in 2016 and has served as Finance Committee Chair for the past year. He also has been an active member of several ACA committees and advisory boards in the areas of investments, state advocacy and coding. He is a past president of the New Mexico Chiropractic Association, sits on the Board of Trustees of the University of Western States as past chair, and is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Dr. Jones brings a deep understanding of integrative health care to his work with ACA; he is owner/partner of an integrative primary care clinic in the Albuquerque area.

Dr. Maiers was elected to the BOG in 2016. She is a professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) in Bloomington, Minn. She also serves as NWHSU executive director of research and innovation and is a principal at the school’s Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy. She has been integral to ACA’s work in respect to clinical guidelines review and the opioid epidemic.

In advance of BOG elections, members of the ACA House of Delegates voted to fill two open seats on the board:

  • Kathy Boulet, DC, of Lewiston, Maine, was re-elected to the BOG and appointed as a member of the Nominating Committee. Dr. Boulet has served previously as ACA’s Maine delegate and is a past president of the Maine Chiropractic Association. She is a pioneer in hospital privileges for chiropractors and has worked as a consultant in integrative medicine with the Central Maine Medical Center.
  • Leo Bronston, DC, of Onalaska, Wis., returns to the board. In addition to serving previously as a BOG member, he was ACA’s Wisconsin delegate for the past 14 years. He has been an active member of ACA committees and advisory boards in the areas of coding and reimbursement, integrative practice and healthcare technology. Dr. Bronston is also ACA’s representative to the American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) advisory panel.

Continuing their service on the ACA Board of Governors this year are Karen Konarski-Hart, DC, of Little Rock, Ark., and public member Steven C. Roberts, Sr., JD, LLM, of St. Louis, Mo., who was appointed Finance Committee Chair by the new president.

NCLC is the premier national conference for doctors of chiropractic, chiropractic assistants and chiropractic students. Beginning in 2020, NCLC will be called ACA Engage. NCLC has long been known for bringing together industry leaders from all over the country to meet with members of Congress on Capitol Hill, and engaging legislators will always be a priority. Over the years, the program has expanded to also include a wide variety of education offerings (with CE credit available), speeches from respected thought leaders and panel discussions that delve into important topics. The new name reflects the association’s efforts to position the chiropractic profession for success by engaging a new generation of doctors with these exciting education, career and leadership-development opportunities.

ATTRIBUTION TO THE 2019 NATIONAL CHIROPRACTIC LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE IS REQUESTED IN ALL NEWS COVERAGE.

New Life West chiropractic clinic in Hayward caters to veterans, active-duty military

Life University Veterans MemorialJan. 14, 2019— A new chiropractic clinic for veterans and active-duty military has opened in downtown Hayward, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Faculty and students from Life Chiropractic College West, also located in Hayward, will staff the clinic and provide chiropractic care at the Hayward Veterans Memorial Building on Main Street. The building, constructed in 1932, reflects the historic nature of the area, according to Alameda County.

This clinic is all about community outreach, said Dr. Scott Donaldson, the Vice President of Clinical Operations at the Monte H. Greenawalt Health Center at Life West. The Health Center will work with the Hayward Veterans Center in a joint effort to provide affordable chiropractic care that’s easy to access for veterans and active-duty military.

“We do want to reach out to both active service and veterans in appreciation for their service to our country,” Dr. Donaldson said. “We’re connecting our student population and veterans with the local veterans center, so there will be veterans serving veterans.” Students and faculty who have served in the military will be able to give back to others who have served or are serving our country.

Dr. Donaldson said an initial exam is free, and other services such as x-rays and adjustments are discounted and half the normal price. For a full list of services and prices, call the  Health Center’s front desk at (510) 780-4567.

The clinic opened at the Hayward Veterans Memorial Building, at 22737 Main Street, on Jan. 9. Life West faculty and students from the Health Center will be available every Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the building.

This community outreach project has been in the works for several months, and is greatly supported by Dr. Ron Oberstein, president of Life West, who has also organized service trips to other countries such as India and Tonga. The idea of service fits well with the Life West philosophy, “To Give, To Do, To Love, and To Serve.” Dr. Donaldson also said it’s important for Life West to be a part of the greater Hayward community, and this joint project with the Hayward Veterans Center will provide Life West with a way to serve in a special segment of the community.

For more information about the clinic or to book an appointment, call the Health Center’s front desk at (510) 780-4567.

Life Chiropractic College West Earns Green Business Certificate

AlamedaCountyCAGBNlogoDec. 21, 2018—Life Chiropractic College West and the Monte H. Greenawalt Health Center, where Life West students learn clinical skills, are delighted to announce that the non-profit college and adjoining health center in Hayward, California have been recertified as a Bay Area Green Business.

Kerri Duggins Rames, DC said the path to recertification was harder after green business standards were raised from the initial certification four years ago, but the journey has been worth it.

“This is an example of positive change that has occurred here at Life West due to our collective efforts across many departments, combined with leadership support and facilities follow-through,” she said. Dr. Duggins Rames is a leading member of the committee charged with implementing green programs and standards at Life West. She said she is grateful for advice from City of Hayward employees and the county coordinator who helped Life West achieve recertification as a green business.

Projects prompted by the desire to be an environmentally friendly business include building an air-scrubber to improve air quality, reducing water use both indoors and outdoors for campus landscaping, bringing in more and larger plants to help with oxygen flow, adding separated waste receptacles to encourage recycling and composting, and reducing the amount of plastic used on campus by, for example, using biodegradable utensils in the college café. For more on those projects, see the Life West online magazine.
