Chiropractors Lead the Way in the Clinical Use of LED Light Therapy with TrueLight by TrueDark

LED light therapy is a healthy, cost-effective alternative to drugs and surgery for healing the body.

SEATTLE, December 20, 2019 – As research continues to validate the science and beneficial effects of light-emitting diode (LED) therapy on the human body, chiropractic offices all over the globe are leveraging the power of LED light therapy (also known as photobiomodulation) to help their patients reduce chronic pain and inflammation. Many chiropractors are also selling TrueLight light therapy devices to their patients for cost-effective, at-home use in between office visits and long-term therapy needs.

LED light therapy is defined as a painless, non-invasive form of treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to help heal the body. Over 3,000 peer-reviewed scientific studies to date have shown that photobiomodulation can have many positive biological effects, including but not limited to:

  • Accelerated muscle recovery
  • Faster would/injury healing
  • Pain relief
  • Improved blood and oxygen circulation
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Fat loss
  • Anti-aging (reduced wrinkles and fine lines)
  • Increase in strength and endurance
  • Improved hormonal health
  • Improved energy levels and mood
  • Improved cognitive function
  • Reduce skin irritation, UV damage, and redness (e.g. rosacea)

While LED technology is not a literal “magic” pill, it is highly favored because of its far-reaching abilities without pain or the use of drugs. Exposure to the diffused light essentially triggers the mitochondria in the body’s cells and results in the production of additional ATP (energy). So, it’s fair to say that the human body isn’t just fueled by food, but also light.

NASA initially developed this technology to protect astronauts’ health – more specifically, to promote the growth and generation of healthy cells, prevent bone and muscle loss, and speed up wound healing — which can be greatly impacted by a lack of gravity. In the world of chiropractic treatments, which focus on muscle, joint and/or bone pain, photobiomodulation can be a very effective, complimentary tool for muscle recovery, tissue regeneration, and pain management.

TrueLight light therapy devices emit a patent-pending combination of light wavelengths to heal the body from the surface of the skin all the way down to the bone. This combination includes deep red (660nm), red (630nm), near-infrared (NIR) (850nm), and yellow light (580nm). Red and NIR have deep penetration levels, allowing the dispersed light to reach into cells, tissues, blood, nerves, and bones. When the light reaches the cells, it also promotes the release of nitric oxide (NO) from the mitochondria. This is especially important for chiropractors and their patients to know because the release of NO helps dilate blood vessels and stimulate ATP production, which in turn can accelerate healing, muscle recovery, and tissue strengthening. Yellow light has a much shallower penetration level and is ideal for creating primary cellular movement at the top layer of skin. (Think reducing skin irritation and redness.)

Truelight photobiomodulation devices are also unique in that they have two different light modes: steady and pulsed light. It has been discovered that when LED lights are pulsed, they stimulate the cells and enable them to produce more protein and ATP, which can help cells heal faster. Alternatively, a steady beam of light can remove/dull pain, reduce inflammation, and allows muscle tissue to relax.

More and more chiropractors are recommending TrueLight products to patients who are looking for relief – from sports injuries, post-surgery conditions, sprains and strains, plantar fasciitis, and various other conditions ailments that often result in pain and inflammation. These devices can also be used to treat skin conditions, accelerate wound healing, and reduce scar tissue. Since TrueLight products offer both targeted and full-body solutions, chiropractors are also recommending that patients invest in their health by consistently using these devices in the comfort of their own homes for deeper, faster healing.

Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research leads $7 million study to address chronic low-back pain in U.S. veterans

Palmer College of Chiropractic(Davenport, Iowa) – U.S. veterans suffering from chronic low-back pain will be the focus of a $7 million study that will examine the role of chiropractic care in addressing pain without the use of pharmaceuticals. The Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR), the largest chiropractic research institution in the nation, will execute the study in collaboration with the Yale Center for Medical Informatics, The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice, and the University of Iowa.  The study, called VERDICT, is funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health (NIH: UH3AT009761).  VERDICT is part of an $81 million federally funded NIH-DoD-VA Pain Management Collaboratory which is an initiative designed to support large-scale pragmatic clinical trials focused on the use of non-drug pain management approaches among active-duty and veteran populations. VERDICT is one of only 11 studies being conducted through the Collaboratory.  “As opioid dependency continues to rise in the U.S., so does the need for effective, non-pharmacological care options to address chronic pain. Our outstanding multidisciplinary team has been laying the groundwork for this important study for several years and is excited to begin recruiting patients,” said Cynthia Long, Ph.D., dean of research, Palmer College of Chiropractic.  “Pragmatic studies such as VERDICT allow us to answer real-world questions about optimal chiropractic care for our nation’s Veterans and beyond. I look forward to seeing this work influence future health-care policy that impacts both doctors of chiropractic and the patients we serve,” added Christine Goertz, D.C., Ph.D., who is joining Duke University’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as professor and the director of system development and coordination for Spine Health on Oct. 1. The four-year study will be carried out within four Veteran Administration clinics across the country: VA Connecticut Healthcare System; Iowa City VA Health Care System; Minneapolis VA Health Care System; and VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.  The study plans to recruit 766 veteran patients, including a minimum of 20% women, to answer two questions: “Does the number of chiropractic visits have an impact on pain management?”; and “What impact does ongoing care have on pain management?”  Veterans experience higher rates of low-back pain, which negatively impacts quality of life and increases risk of opioid addiction. In 2017, the American College of Physicians announced that non-pharmacological therapies should be the first line of defense for patients with chronic low-back pain.  An estimated 20 percent of U.S. adults suffer from low-back-pain, and 23% of low-back pain patients report high-intensity pain that leads to disability. Inadequately managed chronic pain results in loss of productivity, high medical expenses and costly out-of-pocket patient expenses.  The Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research is a part of Palmer College of Chiropractic, the first and largest college in the chiropractic profession. Palmer College of Chiropractic has campuses in Davenport, Iowa; San Jose, Calif.; and Port Orange, Fla. Palmer College of Chiropractic receives $1 million gift to transform student union

Palmer College of Chiropractic

Davenport, Iowa – The student union at Palmer College of Chiropractic, a central hub for student activity and interaction, will soon be reimagined thanks to a $1 million gift from Bruce C. Hagen, D.C. and his wife Bethel M. Hagen. The future Hagen Student Union will be a welcoming, modern space where students, faculty, staff and alumni will gather for years to come.

In honor of their generosity, Palmer College is naming the student union the Bruce and Bethel Hagen Student Union. A dedication ceremony will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 11:30 a.m., outside the Campus Center, during Palmer’s Homecoming weekend in Davenport, Iowa.

Dr. Hagen, a 1953 graduate of Palmer’s main campus, made the decision to become a chiropractor to serve others, as he had done with the United States Air Force during World War II. Originally from Wisconsin, Dr. and Mrs. Hagen made their home in Sioux Falls, S.D. after graduation. There they raised two daughters and four sons while maintaining a successful practice. Three of their sons went on to become Palmer-graduate chiropractors and their grandson is currently attending Palmer’s main campus.

“We’re grateful to Dr. Hagen and his wife for this incredibly generous gift that will help Palmer continue to deliver a leading educational experience for future chiropractors,” said Dennis Marchiori, D.C., Ph.D., chancellor and CEO, Palmer College of Chiropractic. “This gift will play a vital role in plans to enhance and modernize our campus.”

“The sign on the east side of B.J. Palmer Hall at the main campus says, ‘Enter to learn how’ and as you exit it says, ‘go forth to serve’ and I’ve never forgotten that,” said Dr. Hagen. “I hope this will encourage others to give to the College, because we ought to do something above and beyond to make it possible for students to have a better education.”

Palmer is focused on student success and has additional capital improvement projects planned over the next five years that will help ensure Palmer graduates continue to change lives as successful chiropractors all over the world.

More than 900 students are enrolled at Palmer’s main campus, and with planned campus enhancement projects the College estimates that enrollment will increase to 1,200 students in the coming years.

(Loves Park, IL) – A local manufacturer of orthopedic medical devices, Serola Biomechanics, Inc. (Serola) received an award for Continuing Excellence in Exporting during the 2019 Governor’s Export Award ceremony held at the Union League of Chicago on June 26. Serola’s Founder & Co-CEO, Dr. Rick Serola was present to accept the award from Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton and Erin Guthrie, Acting Director of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). The Governor’s Export Awards are the State’s highest recognition of export achievement.

“It was truly an honor to receive this award that acknowledges our ongoing initiative of providing affordable pain management solutions worldwide,” said Serola. “It’s even more gratifying to be given this award as we celebrate our 30th year in business. We are looking forward to continued growth both domestically and internationally.”

A total of 12 Illinois companies were recognized and the judging criteria was based upon the following: export sales as a ratio of total sales, export sales growth, number of jobs created and retained by exports, factors indicating progressive international marketing strategies, multi-lingual and cultural efforts, progression in ratio of exports sales to total sales and number of suppliers based in Illinois.

“Thanks to the hard work of our exporters and the organizations that support them, Illinois is one of the top exporters in the entire country. Exports are an integral part of our economy, employing thousands of men and women across the state and contributing millions of dollars to the state’s economy,” said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. “We are proud to recognize the businesses and groups who excelled in exports over the past year and look forward to continuing to support and grow the industry.”

Serola began exporting in the mid-90’s to its first international distributor who is based in the United Kingdom and remains an instrumental partner. To date, Serola has partnered with 59 international distributors, exports into over 40 countries and holds over 50 domestic and international patents. This year, with the support of Illinois’ State Trade and Export Promotion (ISTEP) program, Serola has focused on expanding into the Southeast Asian Market and has established relationships with two distributors in South Korea, another in Japan and is currently in negotiations with additional prospective partners in both Japan and Malaysia. The company will exhibit at an international trade show, Medical Fair Thailand, later this year with the intent of gaining several more distributors.

“Exporting has been invaluable to the growth of the Serola brand and the overall sustainability of the company,” said President of Serola Biomechanics, Inc., Thomas Person. “We are a small company that likes to do big things and this award is one more step that direction.”

About Serola Biomechanics, Inc.

Get a Head Start with Bio-Kult Migréa

BioKult_MIGREA_3-4_US_CMYK HRTake a natural approach to tackling head discomfort with the launch of Bio-Kult Migréa, the first scientifically developed, advanced multi-action formulation to target both the digestive tract and the head.

Common, disabling, recurrent, neurovascular head discomfort affects 1 in 7 people globally,1 with the majority of sufferers experiencing at least one attack a month, often causing severe impairment and compromising their quality of life, both personally and professionally.

Despite this high prevalence, more than 50% of sufferers are not satisfied with their current treatment, choosing to self-medicate using non-prescription drugs,2 thus increasing the risk of medication overuse side effects.3

Backed by a new published clinical trial,4 this latest addition to the renowned Bio-Kult range offers real hope to sufferers looking for a long term and natural solution. Containing 14 probiotic strains to support gut health and overall wellbeing, Bio-Kult Migréa also includes magnesium and vitamin B, both of which contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.5 Research suggests that the inclusion of magnesium may also help increase resilience to stress6 which is often a trigger for attacks. The addition of vitamin B contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system,5 and to the regulation of hormonal activity5 with research suggesting an association between higher B intakes and protection against inflammation.7

Previous evidence has demonstrated that gut bacteria plays a key role in the gut-brain axis and disturbances or imbalances of the delicate gut flora may be associated with neurological discomfort.8 The association between neurovascular and gastro intestinal issues could be linked to increased intestinal permeability, which allows leakage of undigested food particles and endotoxins into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation9 and possible attacks. Beneficial strains of gut bacteria play a crucial role in supporting the health of the gut lining, maintaining and improving gut barrier function, thereby modulating immune responses and reducing inflammation,10 which research suggests may be of benefit.

Bio-Kult Migréa retails for $29.50 for 60 capsules and is available from Amazon.com or Bio-Kult.com

Structural Elements® Announces Strategic Network Growth Model to Support Franchise Growth Plan

Screen Shot 2019-06-18 at 10.23.01 AMHolistic Orthopedic Wellness Brand Develops Plan with Multiple Paths to Ignite Growth Coast to Coast

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Structural Elements®, also referred to as (se) ®, an orthopedic wellness brand that provides the highest standard of care through a contemporary business model and a proprietary treatment approach, announced today a Network Growth Model strategically designed to create opportunities for individuals interested in clinic ownership or therapy practice to join the (se)® franchise system.

(se)® refers to the proprietary approach founder and CEO Doug Bertram developed as an acupuncturist. Operating on the fundamental belief that the body is a single unit, Bertram developed a mapping technique locating patterns of focal adhesions in response to mechanical stress.

Committed to bringing this treatment to more communities, the Network Growth Model, which offers four paths, supports the growth and development of independent but interconnected specialists and investors to deliver a high impact patient experience and high growth financial opportunity. The four paths include:

  • Regional Developer (RD): The RD will develop, own and operate multiple clinics within their respective territory. Each of these clinics is under agreement with a Clinic Franchisee who owns and operates a physical clinic.
  • Clinic Franchise (CF): The CF will establish, own and operate a physical, franchised clinic within a RD’s territory. CF owners offer treatment rooms and administrative services to Micro Franchisees.
  • Micro Franchisee (MF): The MF, a licensed therapist who can be a chiropractor, physical therapist, acupuncturist, osteopath physician or a massage therapist and has also been trained in the (se)® method, will provide services to patients.
  • Area Representative (AR): The AR, also known as the Master Therapist, is a Micro Franchisee that is responsible for sourcing and training other Micro Franchisees in the (se)® methods and maintaining quality standards within an entire region.

“The roll out of the new Network Growth Model is a major turning point for us,” said Bertram. “The model will allow us to bring this approach to more communities throughout the United States as we have made more paths to ownership available depending on whether the interested individual is an investor or a practicing therapist. An easy way to think of it is as a co-working space – Therapists will solely be focused on providing care and will operate their own practice out of the clinic allowing for the clinic owner to strictly manage clinic operations.”

Structural Elements® currently has three clinics open and operating (Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland and Milwaukee, Wisconsin). The Milwaukee clinic, which is owned by Area Representative Luke Laga, welcomed in three Micro Franchisees in the last four weeks and Hagerstown and Frederick are in the process of onboarding multiple micro franchisees as well.

“The Network Growth Model offers each path a unique set of benefits,” added Bertram. “Whether it’s Micro Franchisees who reap the benefit of having a modern space to practice in at a price point that is reasonable or the Clinic Franchisee who has little overhead thanks to our pipeline of therapists ready to practice, this new model sets us apart and will allow us to grow in target markets throughout the country while helping more people achieve their personal best through our comprehensive approach.”

Structural Elements® operates on a cash-based model, as this approach does not limit therapists to treating just the site of acute pain, but rather treat the whole patient.

Metagenics Announces New Hemp Oil Formula

Dr. Merkle: Keynote Speaker at the Clinical Society for Integrative Oncology

Dr. Van Merkle DCSeoul, Korea —April 21, 2019— Dr. Van Merkle was recently the keynote speaker at the Clinical Society for Integrative Oncology in Seoul, Korea. About 250 oncologists, researchers, and other medical doctors were in attendance. Several traveled from China specifically to hear Dr. Merkle, including some very renowned doctors.

Some of the most renowned doctors in attendance were: Dr. Jin Zhe, M.D. (urologist, professor at Peking University, in the elder care division); Dr. Zhang Jinping, (chair/director of 300 elder care hospitals in China – which covers approximately 100 million people); Dr. Seo Jungbok, O.M.D (K.M.D) vice president in DaeJung Elder Care Hospital in China; Dr. Fu Ping, (chairman of the Chinese Clinical Nutrition Association); Dr. Kim Kyungah, M.D. (G.P) team doctor of DaeJung Hospital, Korea; Dr. Park Minsoo, M.D. (G.P.) one of the most renown TV star doctors in Korea.

Interpreters were obviously needed however, many doctors from China and Korea were medically trained using English textbooks and spoke English fairly well. South Koreans can receive a free, fairly comprehensive blood test every 2 years through the government. There is great potential for natural oriented doctors to use lab testing in their nutrition practice, which is why Dr. Merkle was invited to speak.

Dr. Merkle spoke on laboratory testing and nutrition. He also discussed how serious problems sometimes have simple, safe, natural solutions. Maybe a week or 2 of trying a safe, natural, option might show dramatic laboratory results even in advanced cancer cases. Dr. Merkle presented several of his own cases, showing the validity of nutrition backed up with laboratory testing. Dr. Merkle’s presentation was enthusiastically received. Many doctors wanted pictures with him and he received several very nice gifts.

Dr. Merkle also presented certificates to 26 doctors of the first class trained in Korea using Dr. Merkle’s Science Based Nutrition (SBN) system. The class took the doctors a year to complete and was held by a South Korean doctor that has been using SBN for approximately 10 years. It has taken a long time to develop the SBN system and translate the reports into Korean.

Dr. Merkle was asked to travel to China, Dubai and Singapore and back to South Korea to lecture and train doctors on more natural care, as well as options for cancer and elder care. Those tend to be their most pressing and costly health problems. Dr. Merkle said, “Speaking at the oncology conference was very exciting. I also ate some great food and visited beautiful national landmarks but most importantly, I made some very good friends. I look forward to returning.”

Dr. Van D. Merkle DABCI, DCBCN, CCN, is an August 1982 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. He is board certified in clinical nutrition and a board certified clinical internist, who has practiced in Centerville, Ohio for over 35 years. He is the founder, developer and president of Science Based Nutrition (SBN) – a laboratory and nutrition, patented computer analysis system. He has been the host of the talk show Take 2 Healthcare on WHIO 95.7 FM every Saturday 11AM to noon for over 25 years.
