Chiropractic & Manual Therapies is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal that aims to provide doctors of chiropractic with clinically relevant, evidence-based information. The journal is published by BioMed Central, the publisher of 220 science, technology and medicine open access, online, peer-reviewed journals.
Chiropractic & Manual Therapies is a continuation of the title Chiropractic & Osteopathy (C&O). C&O was formerly known as Australasian Chiropractic & Osteopathy (AC0), previously published by the Chiropractic & Osteopathic College of Australasia (COCA). Free text versions of ACO articles are available at http://www.coca.com.au/index.php?ID=115.
Chiropractic & Manual Therapies serves as a critical resource in chiropractic, and as an open access publication, is more readily available to practitioners, researchers and clinicians worldwide.
Open access
All articles published by Chiropractic & Manual Therapies are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers.
Authors of articles published in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies are the copyright holders of their articles and have granted to any third party, in advance and in perpetuity, the right to use, reproduce or disseminate the article, according to the BioMed Central copyright and license agreement.
Article-processing charges
In open access publishing the publisher charges the authors for publication only after they have passed through a rigorous peer-review process. The publication costs for Chiropractic & Manual Therapies are covered by Chiropractic & Osteopathic College of Australasia (COCA) and the European Academy of Chiropractic (EAC), so authors do not need to pay an article-processing charge.
Indexing services
Following publication in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies, the full-text of each article is deposited immediately and permanently archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine’s full-text repository of life science literature. Chiropractic & Manual Therapies is included in PubMed and all major bibliographic databases.
Publication and peer review process
Chiropractic & Manual Therapies publishes the following types of papers:
Research: reports of data from original research.
Reviews: comprehensive, authoritative, descriptions of any subject within the scope of the journal. These articles are usually written by opinion leaders that have been invited by the Editorial Board.
Case reports: reports of clinical cases that can be educational, describe a diagnostic or therapeutic dilemma, suggest an association, or present an important adverse reaction. It is important to note that case reports highlighting preventive or therapeutic intervention will, as a rule, not be published, because establishing the clinical merits of either requires stronger evidence.
Commentaries: short, focused and opinionated articles on any subject within the scope of the journal. These articles are usually related to a contemporary issue, such as recent research findings, and are often written by opinion leaders.
Database articles: describe a new database or a substantial improvement of an existing database.
Debate articles: present an argument that is not essentially based on practical research. Debate articles can report on all aspects of the subject including sociological and ethical aspects.
Hypotheses: short articles presenting an untested original hypothesis backed solely by previously published results rather than any new evidence.
Methodology articles: present a new experimental method, test or procedure. The method described may either be completely new, or may offer a better version of an existing method.
Short reports: brief reports of data from original research.
Study protocols: describe proposed or ongoing research, providing a detailed account of the hypothesis, rationale, and methodology of the study.
Systematic reviews: should be prepared in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. An additional file, linked from the Methods section, should reproduce all details concerning the search strategy. For an example of how a search strategy should be presented, see the Cochrane Reviewers’ Handbook.
The Editors of Chiropractic & Manual Therapies have produced some guidelines on good scientific writing to assist authors when preparing a manuscript for submission to the journal.
Peer-review policies
Peer review in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies is designed to ensure that published articles are scientifically sound. The submitted manuscripts are sent to two external experts for evaluation of scientific significance and validity.
Peer reviewers have three possible options for each manuscript: accept, accept with revision, and reject. Peer reviewers are asked to justify their decision.
Based on the critiques of the reviewers, the authors may choose to revise their manuscript and resubmit it for an additional review. Chiropractic w& Manual Therapies allows authors a maximum of two revisions of a manuscript.
Authors are able to check the progress of their manuscript through the submission system at any time by logging into the journal’s web site.
We encourage the readers of The American Chiropractor to visit our web site: WWW.chiromt.com One can sign up to receive free email alerts when new papers are published by the journal.

ChiroTouch to Host “Documentation—What Do They Want????????” Webinar with Bharon Hoag
San Diego, CA – October 25th, 2012 – ChiroTouch™, the nation’s leader in chiropractic software, and Bharon Hoag are pleased to announce “Documentation—What Do They Want????????” webinar, which is scheduled to air live for one hour on November 1st, 2012, at 11:00am PST.
“It can be daunting for any chiropractor to navigate how claims are submitted and paid,” said Robert Moberg, President of ChiroTouch. “Mr. Hoag’s webinar will provide the attendees with invaluable information that will help make the process much more clear and much easier to navigate.”
Join Bharon Hoag, executive director of The Ohio State Chiropractic Association. Over the last decade the claims payment systems have changed dramatically. We went from a system of you did it, they paid for it, to a you did it, but forced us to pay you. I hear you!
You might be wondering:
* How do providers spending time treating patients find time to understand what games are being played around them?
* How are providers supposed to function in an environment that is ever-changing and never includes them in the updates? Honestly, they are not. The only way to stay alive in this environment is to not play the game.
This one-hour webinar will help you understand why the environment is what it is today and how chiropractors can not only survive but begin to take control of their own world. You create a model where they need to conform to your method of communicating. Believe it or not, you as the provider hold more of the keys than you think you do.
Chiropractic software designed from the ground up to maximize efficiencies for virtually every process, including patient self check-in, scheduling, SOAP notes, billing, interoffice communication and more, ChiroTouch has developed its HIPAA-compliant system to drastically reduce the time it takes to perform tasks that chiropractors are already doing. That gives chiropractors more time to see more patients—resulting in increased referrals, improved efficiencies, and a direct, measurable impact on practice profitability.
Other recent webinar topics include ‘Art of the Close,’ ‘Building Value in Your Practice and Equity in Your Business,’ and ‘HITECH Stimulus Act Updates.’ The ChiroTouch webinar programs and the attendees have benefited from speakers such as Dr. Patrick Gentempo, Dr. Bob Hoffman, Dr. Eric Plasker, Dr. Ron Oberstein, Dr. Mark Ott, Stanley Greenfield, and many more. This cross-section of the most influential and recognized coaches and speakers has made for a very robust and popular series of webinars.

Dr. Goodman’s leadership resulted in significant accomplishments
(ST. LOUIS) – Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs President George Goodman, D.C. announced today that he will retire as President by March 31, 2013. Dr. Goodman has led Logan for two decades and is responsible for growing enrollment, expanding programs and establishing an endowment and investment base of more than $25 million.
“I am honored to have been a part of Logan during such a dynamic period in this institution’s history,” said Dr. Goodman. “When we started two decades ago, the institution had significant debt and operating challenges. I was able to work with many talented people to deal with those issues, developing and growing Logan in ways that benefit our students, faculty and the surrounding community.”
Two years ago Dr. Goodman agreed to extend his stay as President from 2012 until 2014 in large part because a reaccreditation review was scheduled to occur in late 2014. It was important to both Dr. Goodman and Logan’s Board of Trustees to have an established leadership team in place when that evaluation and site visit took place. Recently, the reaccreditation process site visit was delayed until 2015. Because of that delay, Dr. Goodman shifted his retirement date to 2013. This transition plan ensures that a new President will be in place well before the reaccreditation process begins.
“President Goodman’s leadership has been invaluable to Logan, and his passion and commitment to our mission have been steadfast,” said Steven Roberts, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “On behalf of the board and Logan, I want to express our deep gratitude for his service and outstanding leadership. Logan and the field of chiropractic are better off because of Dr. Goodman.”
Under Dr. Goodman’s guidance as President since 1993, Logan College has achieved several significant milestones, including reaching debt-free status; enrolling 1,000 students for the first time in the school’s history; and winning federal grants for infrastructure, technology and research.
Before being appointed President, Dr. Goodman served for 10 years as Logan’s Vice President of Chiropractic Affairs and also held the posts of Clinic Director and Dean of the School of Postgraduate Education at Logan. A tenured professor, Dr. Goodman has been a member of the Logan faculty for 44 years and spent 20 years in private chiropractic practice.
Logan College President George Goodman to Retire in 2013/Add One/October 18, 2012
The Board of Trustees will appoint a committee to conduct a nationwide search for the next President of Logan. That search will be focused on identifying candidates who will help Logan continue as a leader in the field of chiropractic education and related graduate level programs.

New Blood Tests Provide Detailed Cardiac Risk Profile
Lombard – National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) is now partnering with Cleveland HeartLab to offer important tests that can assess a patient’s risk for a heart attack or heart disease. “These new tests give detailed information that an everyday cholesterol test won’t show,” says Fraser Smith, ND, head of the naturopathic medicine program at NUHS. “Half of all people who have a heart attack have ‘normal’ cholesterol levels at the time. It takes them by surprise. But now we can go deeper and assess the actual condition of the arteries that feed the heart with a series of blood tests developed by Cleveland HeartLab.”
Five simple blood tests can inform NUHS physicians on the level of inflammation in the arteries, as well as plaque formation (arteriosclerosis). This gives NUHS clinicians a more complete picture of each patient’s risk for heart attack. “Inflammation and plaque formation are silent killers,” says Dr. Smith. “However, these new tests allow our clinic to measure their effect on a patient’s cardiovascular system.”
“Whether patients are in their twenties or forties we can give them a reliable report on their risk profile — whether a heart attack is likely in the next year, or whether healthy patients might be able to make small lifestyle changes to avoid a heart attack twenty years from now, we can find out exactly where on the continuum of heart health they are right now.”
The tests determine the level of inflammation and plaque development in coronary arteries, and whether that plaque is growing and at risk for developing into an obstruction or infarction, causing a heart attack. In fact, one of the five tests can determine whether you are in a high risk category with a strong chance of having a heart attack within the next one or two years.
The advanced lipid evaluation in the new tests doesn’t just measure LDL and HDL, it can tell how “sticky” your LDL is. If your LDL is “sticky” you may have a higher chance of plaque formation and arterial damage, even if your overall cholesterol and LDL/HDL levels are normal. Or your HDL, the “good cholesterol,” can be rendered nonfunctional. It could be unable to do its job to protect you. “These tests tell us about the ‘quality’ of your cholesterol, rather than just the quantity, and that’s what gives us an in-depth picture of your heart health and heart attack risk,” says Dr. Smith.
“If somebody’s at imminent risk of a heart attack, we can prescribe aggressive intervention from a cardiologist in addition to dramatic lifestyle and diet changes. If the person has only a slight to moderate risk, we can start him or her on a program of diet, exercise and other lifestyle modifications with follow up testing to see if the changes are working,” says Dr. Smith.
“It’s as if we have a road map,” he explains. “We can point and say ‘you’re right here and we can reverse this,’ or ‘it’s good you came in, because your high risk shows we need to take action right away.”
“The students in the doctor of naturopathic medicine degree program are learning about the interpretation and clinical application of this advanced cardiac testing,” Smith goes on to say, “and these panels from the Cleveland Heart Lab are a prime example of how we train students to combine a solid grounding in whole health preventive medicine with the very best that new advances in medical science can offer.”
“Since heart disease is still America’s number one cause of death, it’s great that our Lombard and Naperville clinics can offer cutting edge lab tests at an affordable cost. Because our clinics offer integrative medical care, including chiropractic, allopathic, naturopathic and oriental medicine, we can follow up with patients after their test to offer effective natural solutions to improve their cardiac wellness,” says Dr. David Parish, dean of clinics for NUHS.
To make an appointment for testing, call 1-630-629-9664 and ask for the Cleveland HeartLab cardiac wellness program at National University’s Whole Health Center.
