AMERICAN CHIROPRACTIC ASSOCIATION ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS

ACA LogoArlington, Va. – The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) elected Robert C. Jones, DC, of Albuquerque, N.M., as its new president last week in Washington, D.C., during ACA’s annual meeting, the National Chiropractic Leadership Conference (NCLC).

Dr. Jones was elected president by his peers on ACA’s Board of Governors (BOG), which consists of five chiropractors and one public member. He replaces outgoing president, N. Ray Tuck, Jr., DC, of Christiansburg, Va. The BOG also elected Michele Maiers, DC, MPH, PhD, of Minneapolis, Minn., as ACA’s vice president.

Dr. Jones was elected to the BOG in 2016 and has served as Finance Committee Chair for the past year. He also has been an active member of several ACA committees and advisory boards in the areas of investments, state advocacy and coding. He is a past president of the New Mexico Chiropractic Association, sits on the Board of Trustees of the University of Western States as past chair, and is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Dr. Jones brings a deep understanding of integrative health care to his work with ACA; he is owner/partner of an integrative primary care clinic in the Albuquerque area.

Dr. Maiers was elected to the BOG in 2016. She is a professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) in Bloomington, Minn. She also serves as NWHSU executive director of research and innovation and is a principal at the school’s Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy. She has been integral to ACA’s work in respect to clinical guidelines review and the opioid epidemic.

In advance of BOG elections, members of the ACA House of Delegates voted to fill two open seats on the board:

  • Kathy Boulet, DC, of Lewiston, Maine, was re-elected to the BOG and appointed as a member of the Nominating Committee. Dr. Boulet has served previously as ACA’s Maine delegate and is a past president of the Maine Chiropractic Association. She is a pioneer in hospital privileges for chiropractors and has worked as a consultant in integrative medicine with the Central Maine Medical Center.
  • Leo Bronston, DC, of Onalaska, Wis., returns to the board. In addition to serving previously as a BOG member, he was ACA’s Wisconsin delegate for the past 14 years. He has been an active member of ACA committees and advisory boards in the areas of coding and reimbursement, integrative practice and healthcare technology. Dr. Bronston is also ACA’s representative to the American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) advisory panel.

Continuing their service on the ACA Board of Governors this year are Karen Konarski-Hart, DC, of Little Rock, Ark., and public member Steven C. Roberts, Sr., JD, LLM, of St. Louis, Mo., who was appointed Finance Committee Chair by the new president.

NCLC is the premier national conference for doctors of chiropractic, chiropractic assistants and chiropractic students. Beginning in 2020, NCLC will be called ACA Engage. NCLC has long been known for bringing together industry leaders from all over the country to meet with members of Congress on Capitol Hill, and engaging legislators will always be a priority. Over the years, the program has expanded to also include a wide variety of education offerings (with CE credit available), speeches from respected thought leaders and panel discussions that delve into important topics. The new name reflects the association’s efforts to position the chiropractic profession for success by engaging a new generation of doctors with these exciting education, career and leadership-development opportunities.

New Life West chiropractic clinic in Hayward caters to veterans, active-duty military

Life University Veterans MemorialJan. 14, 2019— A new chiropractic clinic for veterans and active-duty military has opened in downtown Hayward, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Faculty and students from Life Chiropractic College West, also located in Hayward, will staff the clinic and provide chiropractic care at the Hayward Veterans Memorial Building on Main Street. The building, constructed in 1932, reflects the historic nature of the area, according to Alameda County.

This clinic is all about community outreach, said Dr. Scott Donaldson, the Vice President of Clinical Operations at the Monte H. Greenawalt Health Center at Life West. The Health Center will work with the Hayward Veterans Center in a joint effort to provide affordable chiropractic care that’s easy to access for veterans and active-duty military.

“We do want to reach out to both active service and veterans in appreciation for their service to our country,” Dr. Donaldson said. “We’re connecting our student population and veterans with the local veterans center, so there will be veterans serving veterans.” Students and faculty who have served in the military will be able to give back to others who have served or are serving our country.

Dr. Donaldson said an initial exam is free, and other services such as x-rays and adjustments are discounted and half the normal price. For a full list of services and prices, call the  Health Center’s front desk at (510) 780-4567.

The clinic opened at the Hayward Veterans Memorial Building, at 22737 Main Street, on Jan. 9. Life West faculty and students from the Health Center will be available every Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the building.

This community outreach project has been in the works for several months, and is greatly supported by Dr. Ron Oberstein, president of Life West, who has also organized service trips to other countries such as India and Tonga. The idea of service fits well with the Life West philosophy, “To Give, To Do, To Love, and To Serve.” Dr. Donaldson also said it’s important for Life West to be a part of the greater Hayward community, and this joint project with the Hayward Veterans Center will provide Life West with a way to serve in a special segment of the community.

For more information about the clinic or to book an appointment, call the Health Center’s front desk at (510) 780-4567.

Life Chiropractic College West Earns Green Business Certificate

AlamedaCountyCAGBNlogoDec. 21, 2018—Life Chiropractic College West and the Monte H. Greenawalt Health Center, where Life West students learn clinical skills, are delighted to announce that the non-profit college and adjoining health center in Hayward, California have been recertified as a Bay Area Green Business.

Kerri Duggins Rames, DC said the path to recertification was harder after green business standards were raised from the initial certification four years ago, but the journey has been worth it.

“This is an example of positive change that has occurred here at Life West due to our collective efforts across many departments, combined with leadership support and facilities follow-through,” she said. Dr. Duggins Rames is a leading member of the committee charged with implementing green programs and standards at Life West. She said she is grateful for advice from City of Hayward employees and the county coordinator who helped Life West achieve recertification as a green business.

Projects prompted by the desire to be an environmentally friendly business include building an air-scrubber to improve air quality, reducing water use both indoors and outdoors for campus landscaping, bringing in more and larger plants to help with oxygen flow, adding separated waste receptacles to encourage recycling and composting, and reducing the amount of plastic used on campus by, for example, using biodegradable utensils in the college café. For more on those projects, see the Life West online magazine.

Weekend CEU course covers multiple research-proven pain relief methods.

Akron, Ohio – May 10, 2018 – The Safer Pain Relief Summit, sponsored by Performance Health, is a weekend-long CEU course covering instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, kinesiology taping and therapeutic exercise to restore the human movement system while delivering research-proven pain relief. Hands-on healthcare practitioners—physical therapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists and athletic trainers—receive up to 14 CEUs.

“As an industry partner across numerous healthcare professions, we recognize the effort each discipline is making in the fight against opioid addiction,” said Paul Timko, Vice President, Performance Health. “However, we also see an opportunity to advance the cause by bringing a variety of hands-on healthcare professionals together to share successes, best practices and build a broader community. These summits do just that.”

Each of the 3-day summits include a keynote address, overview of Performance Health’s Safer Pain Relief program, and hands-on training with tools that are best used for non-pharmacological pain management. A recent summit held in Phoenix was led by Jay Greenstein, DC; Sue Falsone, PT, ATC; Shawn Burger, PT; and Benny Vaughn, MT, ATC.

“Attendees of the Phoenix summit gained insight on research-proven non-pharmacological pain relief techniques and hands on experience with a variety of tools they can use to position themselves as an expert in movement and pain relief,” concluded Timko.

PayDC Chiropractic EHR partners with ClearGage LLC for Patient Payment Financing

Clear Gage LogoPayDC Chiropractic EHR, and ClearGage, LLC, the leading provider of patient financial services, have partnered to provide patient financing to patients of PayDC subscriber clinics.
PayDC providers can now offer payment financing to their patients, backed by ClearGage. From within the PayDC platform, a pre-funded plan can be initiated for the patient. The whole process from start to finish is handled right within the PayDC application. This gives a convenient tool for providers to explain to patients all the available financing options while they are right in front of them. When approved, patient payments can be viewed by the provider directly through PayDC’s patient ledger.
This new integration allows PayDC providers to get paid upfront while allowing their patients to pay over time, enabling peace-of-mind for the provider, and better care for patients. Offering patient financing can help reduce bad debt, moderate accounts receivable and increase cash flow.
“Patient financing for care has been an ongoing request by providers so they can more confidently care for those in need,” commented Bob Schoen, PayDC Chief Financial Officer. He continued, “Offering an easy process through PayDC and ClearGage for our providers to offer financing for care is a win-win for patients and PayDC subscribers.”
