Lombard – National University of Health Sciences has provided over 3600 free or low-cost treatment sessions to combat veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) since November 2010. That’s when NUHS opened a program specializing in acupuncture for PTSD in its on-campus clinic in suburban Lombard.

soldierandflagNUHS has a new sponsor in delivering care to local veterans with PTSD, in CHINA-GEL, Inc. Headquartered in Arlington Heights, Illinois. China-Gel manufactures an herbal topical pain reliever. Because of their generous donation, NUHS will be able to offset the cost of the free acupuncture treatments, allowing the university to increase the number of veterans it serves.

The clinicians and interns at NUHS use an effective acupuncture protocol that is proven to work in reducing symptoms of PTSD, including anxiety, insomnia, flashbacks, grief and other debilitating symptoms. In addition to free acupuncture for veterans with PTSD, the NUHS Whole Health Center offers a wide variety of other affordable health services for veterans and their families.

Veterans will also receive complimentary China-Gel pain relief products during their appointments. Since combat veterans often suffer from chronic pain due to previous injuries, the products will provide an additional drug-free means of reducing pain symptoms.  The company has also donated a supply of pain relief products to NUHS for clinical use with all of its patients.

“China-Gel is delighted to partner with National and have the opportunity to help those who sacrificed so much to serve our country,” stated Suzanne Girardin, President of China-Gel, “They put their lives on the line for us, and if it were not for them, we know we would not have the freedom to live life as we know it. National is offering another dimension of treatment to help the veterans. If our partnership in this program can help any veteran face the challenges of life after being deployed, we will have met our goal. It truly is a blessing for us to be a part of this program.

“We are grateful that China-Gel is supporting us in our mission to give back to the men and women who have served our country,” says NUHS President Joseph Stiefel. “PTSD is a growing problem among those returning from the battlefield, often after multiple or extended tours of duty.”

The NUHS clinic has treated veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The clinic hallway boasts a display board featuring photos and branch of service mementos from grateful veterans who have been helped by the PTSD treatment they received at NUHS.
